With approximately 70% of the world’s phosphate reserves, essential for the production of fertilizers and batteries, Morocco is poised to see its wealth increase significantly, according to the Bne Intellinews report. Phosphate rock, a fundamental ingredient of lithium iron phosphate, is essential for electric vehicles and energy storage batteries. This dual importance of phosphate underscores Morocco’s potential impact on the agriculture and electric vehicle sectors. The report also highlights Morocco’s central position in the global phosphate industry, despite China’s current dominance, with production reaching 90 million tonnes in 2023. As the world’s second largest producer, Morocco produced 35 million tonnes in the same year.

Morocco’s significant phosphate reserves offer a unique opportunity to extend its dominance in the phosphate supply chain, particularly in the face of growing demand for battery materials. Morocco’s strategic coastal location, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and the excellence of its Tangier Med port, ideally positions the country to exploit its phosphate resources in the fertilizer and battery markets.

This is part of the government’s ambitious plan to make Morocco a global hub for the production and processing of battery minerals, with the announcement of large-scale electric vehicle battery plants. However, the report stresses that “only a strategic effort and appropriate government actions will allow Morocco to transform its economy and become a leading global player in green technologies and fertilizers.” It also mentions Morocco’s mineral diversity, with significant reserves of lead; zinc; silver; cobalt and other precious metals. Morocco is a world leader in phosphate and fertilizer exports, and also holds important positions in the production of silver, fluorite and barite.
