Algeria, already well positioned among the leading suppliers of gas to the European market, is pursuing its strategy of expanding and modernizing its hydrocarbon sector. To strengthen its growing position on the international gas market, the national company Sonatrach has launched a major project to rehabilitate the Alrar field, located in the llizi basin.

On September 3, 2024, the work was awarded to China Petroleum Engineering Corporation CPECC, including the modernization of surface equipment, the installation of three centrifugal gas compressors, the creation of a condensate separation and removal system, and the construction of a new gas treatment unit. These improvements are essential to maintain the field’s production at a stable level of 10 million standard cubic meters per day, thus ensuring the continuity of Algerian exports to Europe and other markets.

These initiatives illustrate Algeria’s determination to remain a key player in global energy supply. In the face of geopolitical tensions and market developments, the country intends not only to preserve its market share, but also to strengthen its role as an energy pillar for Europe. What’s more, this collaboration with CPECC testifies to Algeria’s openness to international partnerships to develop its energy potential. As demand for natural gas rises, particularly in Europe, Algeria is positioning itself as a strategic and reliable supplier, ready to meet this growing demand thanks to targeted investments and proactive management of its natural resources.

These efforts are enabling Algeria to strengthen its position on the world energy scene, by ensuring the sustainability of its production while meeting the challenges of international demand. The future of Algeria’s hydrocarbon sector looks promising, supported by initiatives such as the Alrar field, which symbolizes the country’s determination to maintain its role as an energy leader. According to the latest report by the International Gas Union (IGU), Algeria exported 52 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2023, ranking 7th among the world’s gas exporters.
